Our Alachua Water

Protect Alachua’s Water From Unchecked Development

In Alachua County, unchecked development threatens our natural resources and water systems. Rapid growth without proper oversight risks damaging ecosystems, straining infrastructure, and compromising public health and the sustainability of Alachua.

The Immediate Threat

The Tara development, a multi-phase project in the Mill Creek Sink Basin, poses a serious threat to Alachua County’s water. Proposed for the northeast side of I-75 at exit 399, this project includes more than 700 houses, with the potential for over 1,000 housing units. In addition, the development plans to include high-density commercial spaces .

Why It Matters

The Mill Creek Sink plays a critical role in the health of our local water. Water flows from this basin into the wells of High Springs, Hornsby Spring, and eventually into the Santa Fe River, one of Florida’s most treasured waterways. The construction of impervious surfaces (like roads, homes, and commercial buildings) will cause significant runoff pollution, putting our water quality and wildlife at risk.

Unchecked, this development will lead to:

  • Contamination of our drinking water: Pollutants from roads, buildings, and yards will seep into the groundwater and directly impact the aquifer that provides water to thousands of residents.

  • Harm to wildlife: The Mill Creek Sink supports critical ecosystems. Disrupting the water flow will threaten both plant and animal species that depend on clean, natural water sources.

  • Damage to springs and rivers: Runoff from homes and businesses could reach High Springs, Hornsby Spring, and the Santa Fe River, degrading these vital water bodies.
